Advice For Writers

Take a writing class. The drivel people write will make you feel a lot better about the drivel you write. Plus it’s something to do at night when the Burning Man parties all start to look the same. Even stilt-walking fire-twirlers get old, believe me.

Begin to record observations about the people around you. Insecure? Record observations about the people you wish you were. Have multiple personalities? Record observations about all the people you are. And anyway, painstaking records are always useful in court.

Read, Read, Read. Bookstores are great pick-up joints.

Set up a schedule for yourself. Some parents write early in the morning before their children wake up. Vampires may prefer nighttime hours and blood-soaked quills. The point is, there is no excuse not to be writing. Not even Glee. Weave your craft into your daily life—Christmas fishing trips with Scott Peterson, unscheduled emergency landings. Or during those Sunday games when no one from your fantasy team is playing.
